Who is Saint Benedict?

Saint Benedict was born in Nursia around the year 480 during a time of great political and social upheaval. Desiring a life centered completely on God, he withdrew from worldly distractions and embraced prayer, solitude, and penance before eventually founding monasteries that became centers of faith, learning, and charity.


His greatest legacy is the Rule of Saint Benedict, a practical guide for Christian living built upon prayer, work, humility, obedience, and community. Though written for monks, its wisdom has shaped Christian life for more than fifteen centuries.


The Catholic Church honors Saint Benedict as one of its greatest spiritual fathers. His witness demonstrates that ordinary faithfulness, practiced every day with love, transforms both individuals and society.
