Who is Saint Anthony of Padua?

Saint Anthony of Padua was born in Lisbon, Portugal, and first entered religious life as an Augustinian canon. After witnessing the courage of Franciscan martyrs, he joined the Franciscan Order and dedicated himself completely to preaching the Gospel.


He became known throughout Europe for his extraordinary understanding of Scripture and his ability to speak clearly to ordinary people. Crowds gathered to hear him preach about repentance, mercy, and the love of Jesus Christ.


Saint Anthony lived with humility and deep charity toward the poor. Tradition teaches that God worked many miracles through him, and his holiness continues to inspire Catholics around the world centuries after his death.
