Who is Our Lady of Guadalupe?

Our Lady of Guadalupe is the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary following her appearances to Saint Juan Diego, an Indigenous Catholic convert, on Tepeyac Hill in December 1531. According to Catholic tradition, Mary appeared as a loving mother and asked that a church be built where people could come to encounter her compassion and the love of her Son, Jesus Christ.

When Bishop Juan de Zumárraga requested a sign, Mary instructed Juan Diego to gather roses from the hillside despite the winter season. When Juan Diego opened his tilma, or cloak, before the bishop, the flowers fell to the ground, revealing the miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The image remains venerated today at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

The apparitions became a powerful moment in the history of Catholic evangelization in the Americas. Mary's appearance, with imagery meaningful to the Indigenous people of Mexico, helped communicate the Gospel across cultural boundaries. Her message continues to encourage humility, compassion, respect for human dignity, and unwavering trust in God.

Sacred tradition remembers Our Lady of Guadalupe as:

  • A loving mother who brings comfort to those who suffer
  • The Blessed Virgin who appeared to Saint Juan Diego in 1531
  • A messenger of God's compassion and mercy
  • A powerful symbol of unity and evangelization in the Americas
  • A maternal protector of human life and dignity
