Who is Saint Teresa of Avila?

Saint Teresa of Avila was born in Spain in 1515 and entered the Carmelite Order as a young woman. Though she struggled with illness and spiritual challenges, she gradually grew into a life of profound prayer and complete surrender to God.


Through years of prayer and contemplation, Teresa experienced a deep union with Christ. She became convinced that religious life needed renewal and courageously worked to reform the Carmelite Order, founding new communities dedicated to simplicity, prayer, and fidelity.


The Church honors Saint Teresa as a Doctor of the Church because of her spiritual writings, including The Interior Castle and The Way of Perfection. Her teachings continue to guide Catholics seeking a deeper relationship with God.
