Who is Saint John the Baptist?

Saint John the Baptist was the son of Saint Zechariah and Saint Elizabeth. Even before his birth, God had chosen him for a special mission: to prepare the way for Jesus Christ. His miraculous birth was announced by an angel, and he was filled with the Holy Spirit from the womb.

John lived a life of prayer, sacrifice, and simplicity in the wilderness. He preached repentance and baptized those who sought conversion of heart. Crowds traveled great distances to hear his message and prepare themselves for the coming Messiah.

When Jesus appeared, John humbly recognized Him as the Lamb of God. Though many admired John, he directed all attention to Christ. His faithful witness eventually led to his martyrdom after he courageously spoke the truth despite opposition.

Sacred tradition remembers Saint John the Baptist as:

  • The forerunner of Jesus Christ
  • The voice crying out in the wilderness
  • The baptizer of the Lord
  • A fearless preacher of repentance
  • A martyr who died defending God’s truth
