Who is Saint Lucy?

Saint Lucy was a young Christian woman who lived in Syracuse, Sicily, during a time of persecution under the Roman Empire. From an early age, she dedicated her life to Christ and consecrated herself to God.

Tradition teaches that Lucy refused marriage in order to remain faithful to her vocation. Her steadfast commitment to Christ brought opposition from those who sought to force her to abandon her faith.

Rather than deny Jesus, Lucy accepted suffering and ultimately martyrdom. Her witness became a powerful testimony to the triumph of faith over fear and earthly power.

Sacred tradition remembers Saint Lucy as:

  • A courageous Christian martyr
  • A witness to purity and faithfulness
  • A young woman devoted entirely to Christ
  • A protector of those suffering eye ailments
  • A symbol of Christ’s light in darkness
