His journey was marked by courage, weakness, repentance, and unwavering devotion to the Lord. Today, Christians look to Saint Peter as a model of trust, leadership, and fidelity to Jesus Christ.

Who is Saint Peter?

Saint Peter was originally known as Simon, a fisherman from Galilee. When Jesus called him to become a disciple, his life changed forever. Christ gave him the name Peter, meaning “rock,” and entrusted him with a unique mission within the Church.

Peter witnessed many of the most important moments of Christ’s earthly ministry. He professed Jesus as the Messiah, walked on water at the Lord’s invitation, and was present at the Transfiguration.

Though Peter denied Jesus during the Passion, he repented with sincere sorrow and was restored by Christ after the Resurrection. Tradition teaches that he later traveled to Rome, where he faithfully preached the Gospel and ultimately gave his life as a martyr.

Sacred tradition remembers Saint Peter as:

  • The fisherman called by Christ to follow Him
  • The Apostle given the keys of the Kingdom
  • The first leader of the universal Church
  • A witness to the Resurrection of Jesus
  • A martyr who died for the faith in Rome
