St. Maria Goretti was born in Italy in 1890 to a poor farming family. After her father's death, she helped care for her family while growing in faith through prayer, sacrifice, and love for God.
At the age of eleven, Maria resisted a violent assault rather than commit sin. She suffered fatal injuries and died the following day after forgiving her attacker, praying that he would one day join her in heaven.
Her canonization in 1950 drew one of the largest crowds ever gathered for a canonization. The Church honors her as a shining witness to purity, mercy, courage, and the triumph of God's grace.
